RUTO Continues with His Usual ‘Lies’: I Have Negotiated with Remotasks to Restore Online Jobs for Young People in Kenya

Published on

In a recent statement, President William Ruto announced ongoing negotiations with the online work platform Remotasks to restore its operations in Kenya. The platform, which ceased its services in March 2024, left thousands of young Kenyans without a source of income.

Ruto’s remarks come in response to the urgent pleas from Kenyan youths who relied heavily on Remotasks for their livelihoods. The platform provided opportunities for copywriting, media labeling, and artificial intelligence model training, offering a financial lifeline to many.

“Kenyans are ready to work on Remotasks,” Ruto emphasized, echoing the sentiment of a young Kenyan who highlighted how earnings from the platform allowed her to renovate her parents’ house and build a modern gate. This underscores the critical economic role Remotasks played for many families.

The shutdown of Remotasks was speculated to be a result of substandard work submissions by some users, leading to the company’s decision to halt operations. Addressing this issue, Ruto stated, “We need to renegotiate with Remotasks because that is the problem I was informed about.” He has already directed the relevant ministry to devise a framework ensuring accountability and responsibility among users.

Despite Ruto’s optimistic stance, some critics question the sincerity and effectiveness of his efforts. Accusations of dishonesty have surfaced, with some labeling his statements as part of a pattern of empty promises. The Gen Z revolution in Kenya, marked by increased activism and demands for transparency, further fuels skepticism toward political figures.

Ruto acknowledged the challenges faced in negotiations, noting Remotasks’ reluctance due to concerns about individual accountability. However, he remains committed to finding a solution that will allow young Kenyans to resume their work and continue earning a living through the platform.

As discussions continue, the outcome remains uncertain. Whether Ruto’s negotiations will succeed in bringing back Remotasks and providing much-needed employment opportunities for the youth will be closely watched by a nation eager for positive change.
