Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai has openly criticized Kenyans wishing for Raila Odinga’s defeat in his bid for the African Union Chairperson (AUC) position. Alai suggests that, win or lose, the outcome may actually boost Odinga’s partnership with President William Ruto.

Alai noted that some Kenyans, particularly from the Mt. Kenya region, are rooting against Odinga and favoring Djibouti’s candidate, Mohamoud Ali Youssouf. However, in a statement on Saturday, Alai argued that even if Odinga—affectionately known as Baba—doesn’t secure the AUC position, it could reinforce his relationship with Ruto, who has heavily supported his campaign.

“Those wishing for Baba Raila Odinga to miss out on the AUC role need to be more concerned,” Alai said. “They believe a loss will lead to a fallout with President Ruto. But here’s the truth—if Baba doesn’t win, he may grow even closer to Ruto. Let go of these illusions.”

Alai’s comments follow significant public debate, particularly on social media, about the evolving relationship between Odinga and the government. Critics accuse Odinga of betraying the youth, particularly Gen Z, who rallied in recent protests that disrupted daily life across the country. This perceived cooperation between Odinga and Ruto has sparked mixed reactions, with some seeing it as a political strategy, while others feel disillusioned.
