National Police Issues Guidelines Ahead of Expected Protests

Published on

As Kenya prepares for demonstrations scheduled on July 23rd, the National Police Service has issued a set of guidelines aimed at ensuring public safety and legal adherence during these events. Authorities emphasize the importance of following established laws to protect the safety and security of all citizens.

National Police Service Guidelines

The National Police Service, led by Acting Inspector General Douglas Kanja Kirocho, has reiterated the necessity of adhering to legal protocols. This includes the Protected Areas Act and the Kenya Civil Aviation Act, which restrict access to certain areas, including those near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Unauthorized entry into these zones is considered a criminal offense, aimed at safeguarding public and national security.

Airport Operations and Security

In response to the planned protests, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has issued an advisory for travelers using JKIA. Given the heightened security measures, passengers are advised to arrive early to avoid delays. The KAA also recommends that travelers contact their airlines for the most current flight information. Both the National Police Service and KAA are coordinating efforts to manage the situation and ensure public safety.

Public Cooperation Essential

Authorities stress the importance of public cooperation to maintain peace and order during the demonstrations. The protests are part of a larger movement against the proposed tax increases in the Finance Bill 2024, which have sparked widespread discontent since late June.
