Some athletes from other countries get paid for winning Olympic medals at the Tokyo Olympics.

Compared to other nations, Kenya reportedly pays $10,000 (Sh1,088,000) for gold medalists, $7,500 (Sh 816,000) for silver, and $5000 (Sh 544,000) for bronze with teams winning gold medals getting Sh500,000.

Kenya has eight Olympic medals (3 Gold, 3 Silver, 2 Bronze) at the Tokyo Olympics.

Emmanuel Korir on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 clinched Kenya’s first gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics when he won the men’s 800m final. For his gold, Korir will pocket Sh1,088,000.

Peres Jepchirchir also won the women’s marathon on Saturday morning to clinch Kenya’s third gold medal.
Her win came hours after Faith Kipyegon successfully defended her gold medal in the women’s 1,500 meters at the Tokyo Olympics with an Olympic record time of 3:53.11.

In Africa, Morocco offers the largest cash prize for its gold medal winner at about $225, 067 (Sh24,480,537),  $140,667 (Sh15,300,349)  for Silver and $ 84,400 (Sh9,180,188)for Bronze while South Africa pays Sh 4million for Gold, Sh2million for Silver and Sh 761,600 for Bronze.

The Nigerian government announced this month that gold-medal winners would receive Sh 1.6 million, silver medalists Sh1,088,000and bronze medalists Sh 816,000.

Singapore offers the largest cash prize for its gold medal winner at about 1 million Singapore dollars (Sh108,800,000) for Gold, $500,000 for Silver and $250,000 for Bronze.  

According to the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC), American athletes will receive $37,500 for each gold medal, $22,500 for each silver medal and $15,000 for each bronze medal.

The Philippines had its first-ever gold medalist at this year’s games after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz emerged victorious in the women’s 55kg category.

As part of the Philippine Sports Commission’s rules, Diaz will get Sh 71,775,000 for winning gold.

The Canadian Olympic Committee’s Athlete Excellence Fund pays gold medalists $20,000 Canadian dollars, silver medalists $15,000 Canadian dollars and bronze medalists $10,000 Canadian dollars.

 The Australian Olympic Committee says Olympians get paid $15,000 , for gold medals, $11,000 for silver medals and $7,000 for bronze medals
