Gurbux Singh’s family had every reason to celebrate after sisters Harsimran and Rasmeet Kaur triumphed in their respective golf championships over the weekend.
Harsimran won the 2021 Ladies Handicap match play championship at Nyali Golf and Country Club, in Mombasa on Sunday, while her sister Rasmeet Kaur,16, defeated a team of 200 golfers to emerge the overall winner of the 2021 Standard Group County Classic Series at the same venue.
Harsimran, playing off handicap 30.1, added another feather to the family by beating handicap 12.1 Club Lady Captain Mary Kandu, 1 up, in the deciding hole 18th to claim the Ladies Handicap Match play trophy.
Kandu finished second, the same position she did in the same event last year.
The month-long tournament began on July 19 with 15 entries and new entrants, mostly Division B players, who were eyeing the trophy and were ready to knock off Division A players like veterans Kandu, Susan Stokes, Mwongeli Nzioka, Terry Odoo, Betty Bundotich, Mary Mariga and defending champion, Alyssa Jamal.
Harsimran beat all the low handicap ladies, Mwongeli Nzioka, Terry Odoo and Susan Stokes in all her matches to sail to the finals after round three semi-finals. She won 1 up in match 1 against Stokes, while in match 2, Kandu had won against Annemarie Dejong.
In the quarter finals of round two match 1, Stokes won 3/2 against Alyssa Jamal, while Harsimran beat Terry Oddo 3/2 in match two.
Match three saw Kandu beat Provia Odhiambo 1 up and in match four, Mary Mariga gave Annemarie Dejong a walk-over after failing to arrive for the action in good time.
At Ruiru Sports Club, handicap 18 Joseph Karienye carded a countback score of 40 points to win the 2021 Tai Sacco golf tournament at the weekend.
He had tied with handicap 21 Berenju Mugo, who was the runner-up. Handicap 25 John Njeru, who was short of 3 points to the lead, was third.
Janet Mwangi, playing off handicap 33, had the day’s best score of 42 points to emerge the Lady winner, while handicap 21 Lucy Kwendo on 39 points was second and handicap 38 Mary Wambui, on 33 points, third.
Handicap 19 Patriciah Odima was the guest winner on 33 points. Other winners were first nine-Mwangi Wahome-21 points, Second nine-Stephen Mwitari-21 points, Nearest to pin Men-Joseph Wahome, Nearest to the pin lady winner-Mary Wanjiku, Longest drive men winner-Martin Murigi and the Longest drive lady winner-Grace Miano.
And at Vet Lab Sports Club 2021 August Monthly Mug tournament saw handicap 26 Henry Kamuti emerge the Men winner with a count-back score of 67 nett after tying on the same score with Men runner-up handicap 24 Brian Akun.
