Aisha Jumwa, the immediate former Cabinet Secretary for Gender, has recently been thrust into the spotlight after her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results were leaked online. The results revealed that Jumwa scored a D- overall, with an E in both Mathematics and Biology.
The revelation of her academic performance has reignited discussions about the qualifications and capabilities of public officials. When President William Ruto appointed Jumwa to his Cabinet, her D- grade became a topic of public interest during her vetting process. Despite the scrutiny, Jumwa staunchly defended her academic record, asserting that her life’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination.
Jumwa highlighted that her success in life, despite not excelling in secondary school examinations, serves as an inspiration. She explained that after dropping out in Form 2, she managed to re-enroll herself in school and complete her education, a feat she considers significant given the circumstances.
“I had to take myself to class after dropping out in Form 2, and I think that’s not a qualification to judge Aisha Jumwa on sitting in the Cabinet,” she said. Jumwa emphasized that the person who nominated her to the Cabinet, President Ruto, conducted thorough due diligence and deemed her fit for the role. She also cautioned against losing hope due to academic failures, positioning herself as a role model for many girls.
“No one should lose hope for failing in school. I am sure I am a role model to many girls out there that despite getting a D- in KCSE, one can still succeed,” she added.
Jumwa’s defense underscores a broader message about the diverse paths to success and the importance of not letting academic setbacks define one’s potential. Her story is a reminder that resilience and determination can lead to significant achievements, regardless of initial academic performance.
