Wonderkid midfielder Dario Essugo on Saturday night broke down in floods of tears after making his Sporting Lisbon debut.
The young footballer, who turned 16 on March 14, replaced club legend Joao Mario in the 84th minute against Vitoria de Guimaraes to become the club’s youngest ever player at just 16 years and six days.
João Mario et Dario Essugo…
Essugo, who donned the No 84 shirt for his big moment, could not hide his tears after the final whistle of the game that ended 1-0 in their favour.
He beat the record held by Santamaria, a defender who set the record in 1999 aged 16 years, 11 months and 12 days.
In heart-warming scenes, the teenager’s teammates congratulated him.
Essugo then explained to the media the reason behind his tears of joy.
“It is an indescribable sensation, in which I always breathed in and always dreamed,” he said with tears in his eyes.
“I have to thank everyone. It is only the beginning, to continue working and helping the club to achieve its goals. It is different to be playing at a senior level. They supported me and I was even more relaxed.”
Essugo was even younger than Cristiano Ronaldo when he made his debut.
Ronaldo holds the record for youngest goalscorer for the Portuguese side, which he did when he was 17 years, eight months and two days.
Cristiano Ronaldo played for Sporting 31 times before being snapped up by Man United.
