Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed has appointed committees for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
In a Kenya Gazette notice, Amina issued several terms and references for the steering and central management committees in what sets the stage for an intense preparation ahead of the Games that begin on July 23.
“The steering committee shall oversee preparations of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan 2021 as well as review work plans, budgets and any other relevant proposals from the Central Management Committee,” the gazette notice read.
“They will also review the final list of athletes that are to participate in the Olympic and Paralympic Games and provide financial oversight.”
On the terms of reference for the Central Management Committee, Amina said: “It shall carry out the daily activities in preparation and execution of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and prepare work plans, budget, team lists and any other proposals for consideration by the Steering Committee and also perform any other duties as assigned by the Steering Committee.”
The steering committee comprises the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage as its chair; Chief Administrative Secretary, Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage as vice chairperson and Principal Secretary, State Department of Sports as a member.
Other members include Principal Secretary, State Department of Culture and Heritage, Principal Secretary, State Department of Information and Communication Technology and Youth, Principal Secretary State Department for Trade, Principal Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Principal Secretary Ministry of Health, Principal Secretary National Treasury and Principal Secretary Ministry of Interior and Co-ordination of National Government.
Secretary for Administration, State Department of Sports Josephine Onunga is the secretary, while Walter Juma Ongeti will be the deputy secretary. Andrew Wakahiu is a member.
National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC) president Paul Tergat, Chef de Mission Waithaka Kioni, Kenya National Sports Council chairman Nderitu Gikaria and NOC secretary general Francis Mutuku are members.
Other members include NOC treasurer Anthony Kariuki, Humphrey Khayange (NOC athletes’ representative), Agnes Oluoch (President Paralympics Committee), Elijah Mwandhi (secretary general of Paralympic Committee), Dennis Muga (Chef de Mission, Paralympic Committee), Alex Isaboke (representative of Sports Journalist Association of Kenya) and Japhter Rugut (CEO Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya).
Sports editors Mike Okinyi, Elias Makori and Robin Toskin are media liaison members for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. Acting Commissioner for Sports Gerald J Gitonga and Athletics Kenya president Jackson Tuwei are also in the mix.
